GIZ TENDER MARCH 2024

INVITATION TO TENDER

BASELINE STUDY ON LEVELS OF INDOOR AIR POLLUTION &STOVES USAGE IN KENYAN KITCHENS

The GCF project “Promotion of Climate-Friendly Cooking: Kenya and Senegal” is designed to tackle GHG emissions from the unsustainable consumption of wood-based fuels in the household cooking sector, which is the largest single contributor to the GHG emissions in the energy sector in both Kenya and Senegal.

The project, therefore, is aimed at demonstrating an innovative ICS market transformation strategy, starting in two countries, Kenya and Senegal, and by doing so improving global knowledge about ICS sector contribution to Nationally Determined Contributions [NDCs]. In addition, it is expected that the project will significantly limit consumption of non-renewable biomass in the cooking sector compared to the baseline situation, leading to GHG emission reductions.

Context

In Sub-Saharan Africa, the most used biomass is charcoal and wood. These fuels are used by 81% of people for cooking purposes. In Kenya, charcoal and firewood are used by 82% of households. Past studies have revealed that these particles exhibit diameters ranging from 0.05 pm to 0.2 pm and tend to harm human health more than coarser particles. It is estimated that in Kenya, 23,000 such deaths occur annually as a result of indoor air pollution.

GIZ is hence seeking a firm to conduct a baseline study on levels of household air pollution in different Kenyan kitchen settings and monitor the usage of project supported stoves.

The firm should meet the following requirements.

  • Capacity to measure air quality pollutants such as PM 1,2.5,10, CO, Co2, Volatile Organic Compounds [VOCs], NOX.
  • Demonstrate knowledge and usage of technical equipment used in measuring pollutants such as Ultrasonic Personal Air Samplers [UPAS], digital temperature loggers, purple air monitors and other equipment used to measure pollutants.
  • Demonstrate usage of Stoves Usage Measuring Systems [SUMS] for collection, transmission, analysis and interpretation of stove usage.
  • Demonstrate  usage of Gravimetric analysis of particulate matter.
  • Average annual turnover of 20,000 EURO for the last three financial years.
  • Firm must have an average number of 5 employees and managers for the past three calendar years.
  • Demonstrate experience in conducting at least 3 air quality experiments and studies in Kenya with references in the below format.
