ACCESS TO GEOLOGICAL DATA FOR ASM FOR PATHWAYS TO PROSPERITY GOLD PROGRAMME IN KENYA AND TANZANIA- SOLIDARIDAD EAST AND CENTRAL AFRICA
Closing date: 20 Aug 2025
Background
About the organization
Solidaridad Network is an international solution-oriented civil society organization working through eight regional expertise centres to transform markets to make them more sustainable and inclusive. Our eight regional expertise centres include Asia, Eastern and Central Africa, Europe, Latin America, North America, Southern Africa, South America, West Africa and our global Secretariat in the Netherlands. Solidaridad Eastern and Central Africa, one of the regional centres, headquartered in Nairobi, Kenya with country offices and programmes in Democratic Republic of Congo, Ethiopia, Tanzania and Uganda. We bring together supply chain players and engage them with innovative solutions to improve production, ensuring the transition to a sustainable and inclusive economy that maximizes the benefit for all. We facilitate strengthening of local capacity in developing countries, support the creation of enabling environments for economies to thrive, and improve market access. Solidaridad embraces the public-private and people partnerships (PPPP) to test innovations, speed up change, and take success to scale. Globally, Solidaridad works around Coffee and other 12 commodities/sectors (http://www.solidaridadnetwork.org)
About the project
The Pathways to Prosperity Gold programme has an overall goal of achieving a thriving ASGM sector that is economically profitable, socially responsible and environmentally sound by 2029. The project aims to achieve this by having an increased number of ASGM with grown, diversified, sustainable and resilient mining businesses with improved working conditions, having a vibrant ASGM sector that has access to mining technologies, equipment and geological data and down and middle stream companies sourcing for sustainable and inclusive gold and investing in responsible mining businesses. Some of the activities that will be undertaken to achieve all of these outcomes include training and provision of products and services (this also includes access to finance), tailored to the needs of miners.
The Pathways to Prosperity (P2P) is a 7-years project being implemented by Solidaridad in partnership with Gender Action Tanzania (GATA) in Tanzania and Centre for Environmental Justice and Development(CEJAD) in Kenya. The project will be implemented in Geita and Shinyanga regions in Tanzania and in Migori, Narok, Kakamega and Turkana Counties in Kenya.
The project is primarily on creating access to geological data for ASM gold mines, through ‘translating’ mining cadastre information and the availability of (basic) technology for ore analysis. Geological data is crucial for ASM gold mines, for example digging shafts and tunnels in the right places and right directions, to make a reliable estimate of the lifespan of the mine and the quality and quantity of the gold deposits. This is important to work more efficiently, to prevent environmental damage and have access to formal finance.
Project’s objectives:
In this project we aim to develop an approach and tools that ASM can use to ‘read’ the mining cadastre data and perform basic sample analysis of their mining concessions. In addition to this, we will work on the introduction of mercury-management/free technology and build an access to market model that puts emphasis on strong supply chain traceability and due diligence (ICGLR and OECD ) requirements.
Scope of Work
The scope of work are as follows:
- Training ASG miners in Kenya and Tanzania on geo-literacy and including development of geo-data monitoring toolkits and equipment to enable the usage of geological data by ASM mines
- Propose training tools and their costs
- Translation of sample results for 10 samples taken in each target ASG mines, in total leading to 80 samples in each country.
- Roll out geo-data pilot with 16 mines, providing additional geology support and explore the potential of providing access to geo-data services to ASG miners.
- Translation of available and obtained geo-data to respective ASGM miners
- To provide technical advice to Solidaridad whenever required
