GIZ Kenya in collaboration with the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum (MoEP), through the Directorate of Renewable Energy, and other partners developed a Behaviour Change Communication Strategy for promoting clean cooking in Kenya. The strategy was launched by the Ministry of Energy and Petroleum in July 2022 and has been instrumental in guiding awareness both national and grassroots awareness raising activities in the country.

In 2023 and partly 2024, the project implemented a grassroots awareness raising campaigns across the four clusters. The focus was on entrepreneurs identified by the project, mainly the ICS producers, stoves installers, retailers and distributors employed as a network to undertake the awareness raising campaigns. Based on the success achieved with these campaigns, and to enhance sustainability beyond the GCF project implementation period, the project now seeks to engage the services of CHPs/CHVs to undertake these activities in the regions where they are located.

In the implementation of the grassroots awareness raising on clean cooking, the GCF project has supported the Ministry of Health to train a total of 2,115 CHVs countrywide out of the MOH target of 130,000. These are spread at the grassroots level across the four clusters. The Community. Health Volunteers/Promoters have a vast network of operation which includes 100 households per community unit.
